Book Description

Faye Longchamp-Mantooth has dug herself a deep hole and she can't make her way out of it. As she struggles to recover from a shattering personal loss, she sees that everyone she loves is trying to reach out to her, but she just can't manage to reach back. Joe Wolf Mantooth has never felt so alone, despite living in his house with the wife he loves, the son he adores, and the father who hasn't got around to telling him how long he's been out of prison or what he did to get sent there. When one of their close friends is brutally murdered, Joe begins to wonder whether Faye will ever be herself again, and he knows he needs to help her. As crimes against women rock Micco County, one after another, he realizes that Faye is in danger from both her inner demons and an outside evil. This evil has intruded on their island home and violated the isolation that they had always believed would protect them. Faye and Joe can only fight this evil if they work together, but first they have to remember how. And all the while, the danger snakes further into their lives, threatening the people they love, the very ground beneath their feet, and even their home and the island where it stands. No man is an island, and no woman. Faye and Joe must break open the isolation that grips them, or they will lose everything.

About the Author

Mary Anna Evans has degrees in physics and engineering, but her heart is in the past. Her series character, Faye Longchamp, lives the exciting life of an archaeologist, and Mary Anna envies her a little. Her first novel, Artifacts, won the Benjamin Franklin award and it was named by the Voice of Young America (VOYA) as an "Adult Mystery with Young Adult Appeal." Her second novel, Relics, was an Independent Mystery Booksellers Association (IMBA) bestseller. Her third novel, Effigies, was named a Book Sense Notable Book. For the incurably curious, Mary Anna's first published work, her master's thesis, was entitled A Modeling Study of the NH3-NO-O2 Reaction Under the Operating Conditions of a Fluidized Bed Combustor. Like her mysteries, it was a factual page-turner but, no, it's not available online. She turned from engineering to fiction after the birth of her third child, shifting her focus from managing hazardous wastes to preparing balanced meals. She has yet to acquire the knack of laundry management.

My Review

Isolation is the ninth book in the Faye Longchamp series by Mary Anna Evans. I always wanted to be an archaeologist when I was a child so I have been loving this series. Isolation is a great addition to the series.

Isolation is set on Joyeus Island which is the home of Faye Longchamp and her husband Joe Wolf Mantooth. The island is located in one of the most isolated and uninhabited areas of Florida on the northern gulf coast. Faye has suffered a devastating miscarriage which has isolated her from her husband. Isolation also describes their island and how they always thought that it's isolated location would protect them from the world. They quickly find out they were not as isolated as they thought.

The novel starts out a tad slow but hang in there and you will be rewarded. Once the action picks up the story flies along. There is a chemical contamination to deal with. Why is there an old kerosene storage on the island and arsenic...where and why would that be present? And who is stalking women and murdering one of them? There are lots of great twists in the plot of Isolation. The characters are all very fleshed out and believable. Good story.

Highly recommend Isolation by Mary Anna Evans.
