Book Description

A deliciously disturbing, compulsively readable debut domestic suspense--prepare to meet The Other Woman: there’s nothing she won’t do to keep you away from her son ...

Emily thinks Adam’s perfect; the man she thought she’d never meet. But lurking in the shadows is a rival; a woman who shares a deep bond with the man she loves.

Emily chose Adam, but she didn’t choose his mother Pammie. There’s nothing a mother wouldn’t do for her son, and now Emily is about to find out just how far Pammie will go to get what she wants: Emily gone forever.

The Other Woman is an addictive, fast-paced psychological thriller about the destructive relationship between Emily, her boyfriend Adam, and his manipulative mother Pammie.

My Review

The Other Woman is the debut by author Sandie Jones. This is one terrific read. I really enjoyed it.

The Other Woman is one of those thrillers that you cannot put down. The twist at the end was quite delightful. I raced through this book. It is very fast paced and I needed to know what was going to happen next.

The Other Woman is set in London but these characters could be anywhere. The characters totally move this story along. They are truly fascinating.

I highly recommend The Other Woman.

Book Description

2016 Unhanged Arthur Award for Best Unpublished First Crime Novel — Winner

When a phantom stalker targets her friend, Lacey McCrae’s crime-busting skills are tested to their limits.

With her career in tatters and her marriage receding in the rear-view mirror, ex-RCMP corporal Lacey McCrae trades her uniform for a tool belt, and the Lower Mainland for the foothills west of Calgary. Amid the oil barons, hockey stars, and other high rollers who inhabit the wilderness playground is her old university roommate, Dee Phillips. Dee’s glossy life was shattered by a reckless driver; now she’s haunted by a nighttime prowler only she can hear.

As snowmelt swells the icy river, threatening the only bridge back to civilization, Lacey must make the call: assume Dee’s in danger and get her out of there, or decide the prowler is imaginary and stay, cut off from help if the bridge is swept away.

About the Author

J.E. Barnard’s first novella, Maddie Hatter and the Deadly Diamond, was a 2016 Prix Aurora finalist. When the Flood Falls won the Unhanged Arthur Ellis Award in 2016. She lives in Calgary.

My Review

When the Flood Falls is the first book in the Falls Mystery Series by author J. E. Barnard.

When the Flood Falls is set outside of Calgary, Alberta in the small town of Bragg Creek. Bragg Creek is a wealthy enclave in the foothills. There is a river that runs through town that has caused wide spread devastation in the past from flooding. In the early stages of the book the river is rising!

Lacey McRae has recently retired from the RCMP and is setting a new path for herself. Staying with an old friend in Calgary and working as a security consultant brings Lacey to Bragg Creek.  A new museum is opening and the company Lacey works for is installing the security. An old friend of Lacey's, Dee, lives in Bragg Creek. She has had some prowler scares so Lacey stays with her.

I love books set in Canada. Barnard really brings the Bragg Creek area to life for the reader.

I found it a bit slow at first but the pace picked up and it was hard to put down.

Highly recommend When the Flood Falls. I'm am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Review: Desolation Mountain (Cork O'Connor #17) by William Kent Krueger

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author William Kent Krueger delivers yet another “punch-to-the-gut blend of detective story and investigative fiction” (Booklist, starred review) as Cork O’Connor and his son Stephen work together to uncover the truth behind the tragic plane crash of a senator on Desolation Mountain and the mysterious disappearances of several first responders. This is a heart-pounding and devastating mystery the scope and consequences of which go far beyond what father or son could ever have imagined.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

To Stephen O’Connor, Hamlet’s dour observation is more than just words. All his life, he has had visions of tragedies to come. When he experiences the vision of a great bird shot from the sky, he knows something terrible is about to happen. The crash of a private plane on Desolation Mountain in a remote part of the Iron Lake Reservation, which kills a United States senator and most of her family, confirms Stephen’s worst fears.

Stephen joins his father, Cork O’Connor and a few Ojibwe men from the nearby Iron Lake reservation to sift through the smoldering wreckage when the FBI arrives and quickly assumes control of the situation. What seems like the end of the O’Connors’ involvement is, however, only the beginning of a harrowing journey to understand the truth behind the Senator’s death. As he initiates his own probe, Cork O’Connor stumbles upon a familiar face in Bo Thorson, a private security consultant whose unnamed clients have hired him to look quietly into the cause of the crash. The men agree to join forces in their investigation, but soon Cork begins to wonder if Thorson’s loyalties lie elsewhere.

In that far north Minnesota County, which is overrun with agents of the FBI, NTSB, DoD, and even members of a rightwing militia, all of whom have their own agendas, Cork, Stephen, and Bo attempt to navigate a perilous course. Roadblocked by lies from the highest levels of government, uncertain who to trust, and facing growing threats the deeper they dig for answers, the three men finally understand that to get to the truth, they will have to face the great menace, a beast of true evil lurking in the woods—a beast with a murderous intent of unimaginable scale.

About the Author

Raised in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon, William Kent Krueger briefly attended Stanford University—before being kicked out for radical activities. After that, he logged timber, worked construction, tried his hand at freelance journalism, and eventually ended up researching child development at the University of Minnesota. He currently makes his living as a full-time author. He’s been married for over 40 years to a marvelous woman who is an attorney. He makes his home in St. Paul, a city he dearly loves.

Krueger writes a mystery series set in the north woods of Minnesota. His protagonist is Cork O’Connor, the former sheriff of Tamarack County and a man of mixed heritage—part Irish and part Ojibwe. His work has received a number of awards, including the Minnesota Book Award, the Loft-McKnight Fiction Award, the Anthony Award, the Barry Award, the Dilys Award, and the Friends of American Writers Prize. His last five novels were all New York Times bestsellers.

"Ordinary Grace," his stand-alone novel published in 2013, received the Edgar Award, given by the Mystery Writers of America in recognition for the best novel published in that year. "Windigo Island," number fourteen in his Cork O’Connor series, was released in August 2014.

My Review

Desolation Mountain is the seventeenth book in the Cork O'Connor series. I have read every book in the series and Desolation Mountain is an excellent addition.

The Cork O'Connor series is set in northern Minnesota. It is a beautiful wild unpopulated area that Krueger captures beautifully in this series. Desolation Mountain brings us to another part of the Iron Lake Reservation. A plane carrying the state senator has crashed into Desolation Mountain. Cork and his son Stephen are drawn to the circumstances around the crash as people start disappearing and government operatives fill the bush.

The Cork O'Connor series is the type of continuing series I like. Each books moves the family story along a little. The reader gets to know all the characters and look forward to seeing them again! Young Stephen is now very much an adult and is featured in this book.

I loved all the twists in this book. It was an excellent read and that I had a hard time putting down.

I highly recommend Desolation Mountain. I also highly recommend you read the entire series.
