My Review

I have to tell you about this fantastic new book by Barbara Fradkin. Fire in the Stars is the first book in a new series featuring Amanda Doucette. It is not available until September 3rd so be sure to mark your calendar with this new release.

Amanda is a former foreign aid worker who is suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) after horrific events in Nigeria. She heads to Newfoundland to meet with a friend who was with her in Africa and is also suffering the aftereffects. When she arrives he is nowhere to be found...he has taken off with son on a camping trip without her. She sets out to find him along with her dog Kaylee. RCMP officer Chris Tymko is also concerned about her friend Phil and joins her in her quest to find him and his son.

I loved the setting of Newfoundland. Amanda and Chris head to the Great Northern Peninsula, an area I really did not know much about before. One of my great-grandfathers came from Newfoundland so I am always interested in learning more. I thought that Fradkin did a fabulous job in describing the area.

There is a lot going on in Fire in the Stars. Who are these foreign men that have been spotted? Are they terrorists? What is going on with the large shrimp boat docked in St. Anthony? And what happened to the cabin. Amanda and her dog Kaylee have quite the adventure trying to track down Phil and his son. My heart was racing as Amanda fought to survive in the unforgiving wilderness of Newfoundland.

I could not put Fire in the Stars down. I pretty much ignored everything around me I was so engrossed in this book. I had to keep finding out what was going to happen next. Fire in the Stars is a brilliantly plotted book.

I highly recommend Fire in the Stars!

Book Description

In need of a good adventure, Delaney Nichols takes the leap and moves to Edinburgh, Scotland to start a job at The Cracked Spine. She doesn't know much about what she's gotten herself into, other than that the work sounds exciting, and that her new boss, Edwin MacAlister, has given her the opportunity of a lifetime. Edwin has promised that she'll be working with "a desk that has seen the likes of kings and queens, paupers and princes," and Delaney can't wait to get started.

When she arrives, she meets her new Scottish family; also working at the Cracked Spine are Rosie, perpetually wrapped in scarves, and who always has tiny dog Hector in tow; Hamlet, a nineteen-year-old thespian with a colored past and bright future; and Edwin, who is just as enigmatic and mysterious as Delaney expected. An unexpected bonus is Tom the bartender from across the street, with his piercing eyes, and a rolling brogue -- and it doesn't hurt that he looks awfully good in a kilt.

But before she can settle into her new life, a precious artifact -- a previously undiscovered First Folio of Shakespeare's plays -- goes missing, and Edwin's sister is murdered, seemingly in connection to the missing folio. Delaney decides to do some sleuthing of her own, to find out just what the real story is behind the priceless folio, and how it's connected to the tragic death, all without getting harmed herself.

About the Author

My husband and I moved to Arizona in February of 2015 but before that we lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. I moved there for an advertising job right after college. I hadn't planned on staying twenty-seven years, but I met Charlie, we got married, we had our son, and a really terrific life happened. I loved Utah, and those twenty-seven years were wonderful. Our son's in college in Missouri now, and we're enjoying our new and very desert adventure.

As a kid I moved around a lot. My dad was a football coach, mostly throughout the Midwest but we spent one year in Portales, New Mexico. A couple of things stood out and and stayed with me that year. 1 - We lived in a haunted house. 2 - The southwest rubbed off on me and I have loved it ever since.

I did get to start and finish high school in one place - Des Moines, Iowa, which is a wonderful city even if the humid climate always was a challenge. I ended up going to college there too, at Drake University where I studied journalism. I made some great friends those years. I'm glad to still be in touch with many of them.

I have only ever wanted to be a writer. I've had good jobs, bad jobs, great bosses, and terrible bosses. Through it all and ever since I was seven I have only wanted to write. I'm grateful to have the opportunity now. If you're interested in my road to becoming a published author, I posted the story on my agent's blog.  http://bookendslitagency.blogspot.ca/2010/04/paige-shelton-on-getting-published.html

I spend a lot of time on Facebook. I've been told I talk way too much about my personal life over there, but I don't see that changing any time soon. Find me if you're interested.

My Review

I could completely relate to Delaney Nichols in The Cracked Spine as she was in need of a good adventure. Sometimes that is just what we need...a good adventure.

A Cracked Spine is the first book in the Scottish Bookshop Mystery series by author Paige Shelton. It is also the first book of Paige Shelton's that I have read although as an author her books have been on my radar for some time. She focuses on cozy mysteries.

A Cracked Spine in set in Edinburgh in Scotland which is a great location and I enjoyed being taken there. A Cracked Spine starts off with a mystery in a mystery....what on earth is the secret business conducted at A Cracked Spine bookstore!? It is a fascinating place, the Cracked Spine bookstore. Wealthy owner Edwin is a collector of all things fantastic and Delaney is excited to discover them all. Then Edwin's sister is found dead and the real mystery begins.

I really enjoyed The Cracked Spine. Great book.

Book Description

When outspoken radio talk show host Philip Long is kidnapped and murdered, Detective Macy Greeley leaves her young son in the care of her mother and heads up to remote Walleye Junction, Montana to take charge of the investigation. It is initially believed that Long’s murder is the result of a controversial radio show he’s done on the rise of far right militias in the state. Within days the two kidnappers are found dead following a massive heroin overdose, and the authorities are hopeful the investigation is finished. But there are too many discrepancies for Macy to settle for obvious answers. The kidnapper’s bodies have been moved, their son is on the run and a series of anonymous emails point investigators toward the murky world of prescription painkiller abuse. Macy soon finds herself immersed in small town intrigues as she races to find who’s really responsible for Philip Long’s murder.

Meanwhile, Philip Long’s daughter Emma is dealing with her own problems. It’s been twelve years since she left Walleye Junction after her best friend died from a drug overdose. Emma finds that little in Walleye Junction has changed in her absence. She is also becoming increasingly uneasy as the familiar surroundings stir up memories that are best forgotten.

With Walleye Junction, a taut, propulsive mystery, Karin Salvalaggio will once again grip readers from the opening page to the stunning conclusion.

Her debut novel, a thriller entitled Bone Dust White, has received critical praise. Burnt River, the follow up in the Macy Greeley Mystery Series, will be published on May 12th 2015

My Review

Walleye Junction is written by author Karin Salvalaggio. This is the first book that I have read of Salvalaggio's.

Walleye Junction is a straight forward mystery. It is well written and I enjoyed the Montana setting. The story was alternately told by investigator Macy and victim's daughter Emma. I found that a bit confusing a first but once I concentrated on discerning whose voice was telling the story, the novel flowed much better for me.

Walleye Junction is a solid well-written  mystery that I'm sure you'll enjoy.

My Review

5 Minutes With Jesus: Peace for Today is another winner from Christian speaker and author Sheila Walsh. 5 Minutes With Jesus is a devotional.

5 Minutes With Jesus: Peace for Today is available as an ebook as well as in hardcover. I am currently enjoying the ebook version. 5 Minutes with Jesus is a great way to start the day. Each chapter begins with a devotional and is followed by related bible verses in several versions such as NLT and NIV.

Sometimes all we have is 5 minutes to devote to bible study in our lives. Sheila Walsh's 5 Minutes With Jesus: Peace for Today is great for days like that. Though brief, each devotional is filled with interesting and challenging insights.

I think you will enjoy 5 Minutes With Jesus: Peace for Today. It would also be a great gift.

She takes her young son Liam on the cross-country train trip, but when they arrive in San Francisco, Molly is told that she's too late, her husband's funeral was yesterday. She's devastated, even more so when she receives a cryptic note saying Daniel's death was not an accident. My Review

Time of Fog and Fire is the second book that I have read in the Molly Murphy series by author Rhys Bowen. I found Time of Fog and Fire to be extremely an enjoyable read. I had forgotten some of the details of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 and it was fascinating to be reminded.

Molly's husband Daniel is off on a mysterious project for the White House. She is shocked to see him in San Francisco on a newsreel.  When a mysterious letter arrives from Daniel, she along with their young son Liam head for San Francisco to help him. When she arrives she is shocked to discover that he is dead.

Through a fog of despair Molly moves to solve Daniel's murder. There are a lot of twists and turns as the reader is taken through the events and chaos of the San Francisco earthquake and fire. I could hardly put this book as I was glued to the story.

I highly recommend Time of Fog and Fire by author Rhys Bowen.

Book Description

The bestselling author of the acclaimed standalones After I’m Gone, I’d Know You Anywhere, and What the Dead Know, challenges our notions of memory, loyalty, responsibility, and justice in this evocative and psychologically complex story about a long-ago death that still haunts a family.

Luisa “Lu” Brant is the newly elected—and first female—state’s attorney of Howard County, Maryland, a job in which her widower father famously served. Fiercely intelligent and ambitious, she sees an opportunity to make her name by trying a mentally disturbed drifter accused of beating a woman to death in her home. It’s not the kind of case that makes headlines, but peaceful Howard county doesn’t see many homicides.

As Lu prepares for the trial, the case dredges up painful memories, reminding her small but tight-knit family of the night when her brother, AJ, saved his best friend at the cost of another man’s life. Only eighteen, AJ was cleared by a grand jury. Now, Lu wonders if the events of 1980 happened as she remembers them. What details might have been withheld from her when she was a child?

The more she learns about the case, the more questions arise. What does it mean to be a man or woman of one’s times? Why do we ask our heroes of the past to conform to the present’s standards? Is that fair? Is it right? Propelled into the past, she discovers that the legal system, the bedrock of her entire life, does not have all the answers. Lu realizes that even if she could learn the whole truth, she probably wouldn’t want to.

Her sister, Susan, is a local bookseller.

My Review

Wow! Wilde Lake by Laura Lippman is completely mesmerizing. Now that I am finished reading it, I cannot get over how well plotted Wilde Lake is and how beautifully everything came together at the end. Lippman gets better with each book she writes.

I loved the main character of Luisa Brant. She is very endearing, realistic and likeable. Usually Lippman writes about crime but Wilde Lake focuses more on people and their relationships. The story and tone are influenced by To Kill a Mockingbird. Lippman is able to write a completely different tale yet complement the brilliance that is To Kill a Mockingbird.

I really enjoyed Wilde Lake. Great read!

Book Description

Wedding season has arrived in New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe’s next novel in the “distinct, complex, and endearing” (Charleston Magazine) Lowcountry Summer series, set against the romantic, charming Charleston Lowcountry.

Nothing could be more enchanting than a summer wedding—or two!—in Charleston’s fabled lowcountry. A centuries-old plantation, an avenue of ancient oaks dripping moss, a storied ballroom, a sand dune at sunset…

Yet when a stranger arrives, a long held family secret could silence the bells ringing for the Muir sisters. Scandals surface, family bonds are questioned, and promises are broken and renewed. In A Lowcountry Wedding Monroe delves into the heart of marriage, commitment, and family ties. Huffington Post calls the Lowcountry Summer series “the perfect beach read and a whole lot more.”

My Review

A Lowcountry Wedding is the first book of Mary Alice Monroe's that I have read. She has been on  my radar for some time and I'm glad I read A Lowcountry Wedding. Although it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a stand alone which is what I did.

A Lowcountry Wedding is set in the Charleston area of South Carolina. It is one of my favorite areas and the author portrayed it perfectly. We have a number of family weddings coming up so I enjoyed reading about the weddings being planned. I also enjoyed all of the characters. The writing style was easy to read and enjoyable.

If you are looking for a light summer read, A Lowcountry Wedding is for you.

Book Description

Summer in London-the sun is finally shining, the flowers are in bloom, and life is humming merrily along for book editor Samantha Clair, off to lunch with her old friend, art-dealer Aidan Merriam. Humming merrily until she learns that his partner has just been found dead in their gallery, slumped over his desk with a gun in his hand. Could anything be worse? Oh yes, the police investigation is being led by Inspector Jake Field, who just happens to be Sam's new boyfriend. And Aidan, who just happens to be Sam's ex-boyfriend, wants Sam's help. Finding herself drawn into another investigation, Sam does the only sensible thing and calls her mother. Before long, Sam finds her loyalties stretched to the limit as she herself is threatened.

Armed with nothing more than her trusty weapons of satire, cynicism and a stock of irrelevant information culled from novels, Sam races to find a killer who is determined to find her first in the newest fast-paced, uproarious novel in the critically acclaimed series from New York Times bestselling author Judith Flanders.

About the Author

Judith Flanders was born in London, England, in 1959. She moved to Montreal, Canada, when she was two, and spent her childhood there, apart from a year in Israel in 1972, where she signally failed to master Hebrew.

After university, Judith returned to London and began working as an editor for various publishing houses. After this 17-year misstep, she began to write and in 2001 her first book, A Circle of Sisters, the biography of four Victorian sisters, was published to great acclaim, and nominated for the Guardian First Book Award. In 2003, The Victorian House (2004 in the USA, as Inside the Victorian Home) received widespread praise, and was shortlisted for the British Book Awards History Book of the Year. In 2006 Consuming Passions, was published. Her most recent book, The Invention of Murder, was published in 2011.

Judith also contributes articles, features and reviews for a number of newspapers and magazines.

My Review

A Bed of Scorpions is the second Sam Clair mystery by author Judith Flanders. I love Flanders witty writing style. I just love how she portrays main character Sam Clair. I can completely identify with Sam. I love all her observations about the realities of life. For example, it is summer and everyone who is in the office hates the people on vacation or "working from home". And the treat table in the communal office kitchen...if you don't bring back treats from your vacation to share with your co-workers...well people just didn't do it!

A Bed of Scorpions is a delightful witty novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend.
