Book Description

In the summer of 1992, a year after riots exploded between black and Jewish neighbors in Crown Heights, a black family is brutally murdered in their Brooklyn home. A teenager is quickly convicted, and the justice system moves on.

Twenty-two years later, journalist Rebekah Roberts gets a letter: I didn't do it. Frustrated with her work at the city’s sleaziest tabloid, Rebekah starts to dig. But witnesses are missing, memories faded, and almost no one wants to talk about that grim, violent time in New York City—not even Saul Katz, a former cop and her source in Brooklyn’s insular Hasidic community.

So she goes it alone. And as she gets closer to the truth of that night, Rebekah finds herself in the path of a killer with two decades of secrets to protect.

From the author of the Edgar-nominated Invisible City comes another timely thriller that illuminates society’s darkest corners. Told in part through the eyes of a jittery eyewitness and the massacre’s sole survivor, Conviction examines the power—and cost—of community, loyalty, and denial.

Conviction is New York City crime at its very best: gritty, realistic, culturally complex and sometimes really terrifying, but ultimately full of hope, with a heroine you can’t help but root for. Brava, Julia Dahl―I couldn’t put the damn thing down.”―Lisa Lutz

“Julia Dahl’s Conviction is a thrilling, utterly absorbing crime novel. With tender-tough reporter Rebekah Roberts at the story’s center, it jolts the heart, while also raising bigger, troubling questions―about criminal confessions, urban fear, and the many, many ways our moral and ethical convictions can both guide us and mislead us, and ultimately save us.”―Megan Abbott

About the Author

Julia Dahl was born in Fresno, Calif., to a Lutheran father and a Jewish mother. She currently lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Julia has been writing about crime since 2004 when Seventeen magazine sent her to cover the story of a young Birmingham, Ala., girl who had been killed by her mother. Since then, she has worked as a freelance reporter at the New York Post, the deputy managing editor of The Crime Report, and now covers crime and justice for CBSNews.com.

Julia's feature articles have appeared in Mental Floss, Salon, Pacific Standard, the Columbia Journalism Review, the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine, and the Daily Beast, among others. She has been the recipient of fellowships from the H.F. Guggenheim Foundation and the Nation Institute for her reporting on criminal justice issues.

Before turning her attention to crime and justice, Julia was an editor at Redbook and Marie Claire. She began her career fact-checking at Entertainment Weekly.

INVISIBLE CITY is her first novel. She is at work on the sequel.

My Review

Conviction is the third Rebekah Roberts novel by author Julia Dahl. I have read the first two books in the series previously. Conviction could be a stand alone novel but I think that readers would enjoy reading the entire series.

Conviction tells the story of a young man, DeShawn, who was convicted unjustly of murdering his foster parents and his young foster sister. He has written a letter to Rebekah, who is a newspaper reporter, pleading his case that he has been incarcerated for over 20 years and that he is innocent. Rebekah quickly realizes that witnesses were ignored or lied and that DeShawn is innocent. But the main problem in the case is that her contact in the Hasidic community, Saul Katz, was a police officer involved in the original case back in 1992. Now, Saul is involved with Rebekah's mother so she is torn.

Conviction is a great read. I enjoy the New York setting which is very realistically portrayed by author Dahl. The characters are all interesting.

Highly recommend Conviction by Julia Dahl.

Book Description

Welcome to Torte—a friendly, small-town family bakery where the pastries are delicious…and, now, suspicious.

It’s almost spring in Ashland, Oregon, and the town is preparing for the Shakespeare and the annual Chocolate Festival. Business is cookin’ at Torte, and the store is expanding as Jules’ team whips up crèpes filled with mascarpone cheese and dark chocolate. Torte stands a chance of being this year’s confectionery belle of the ball! Life couldn’t be sweeter—unless murder taints the batter.

Evan Rowe, of Confections Couture, makes a chocolate fountain that would put Willy Wonka to shame, and his truffles are to die for—literally? Yes, the world-renowned chocolatier has just turned up dead…right after sampling a slice of Jules’ decadent four-layer chocolate cake. Now all eyes are on Jules as she tries to find the mysterious ingredient in her own recipe. Can she sift out the truth before another contestant bites the buttercream?

My Review

Fudge and Jury is the fifth book in the A Bakeshop Mystery by Ellie Alexander. This is a very enjoyable cozy series. I have read most of the earlier books in the series.

The Bakeshop Mystery series is set in the lovely southern Oregon festival town of Ashland. Ashland is famous for its Shakespearean theater as well as other tourist attractions. Ellie Alexander does a fantastic job of bringing Ashland to life in this series.

There is no sign of Jules' husband Carlos is this latest outing but she has plenty of local interest. The crew at the bakeshop Torte particularly her mother are prominently featured as Jules realizes more and more what the people at Torte and Ashland itself mean to her.

The murder-mystery centers around the murder of a local chocolatier. This occurs during the annual chocolate festival. Despite Evan's death and Jules' preoccupation with it, Torte shines at the event which ensures that Jules knows she is in the right place.

Great mystery. Well written and enjoyable. Highly recommend.

My Review

The Glow of Death is the eleventh Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery by author Jane K. Cleland. The Glow of Death is the first book that I have read in this series. I wish I had time to go back and read all the earlier books as Cleland is a good writer and storyteller. The Glow of Death can be read as a stand alone novel. I had no problem figuring out the characters in the story.

The Glow of Death is set in coastal New Hampshire. It is a lovely area that I have visited and Cleland presented the area very well. I enjoyed the main character Josie as well as the supporting characters. The Glow of Death revolves around a beautiful Tiffany lamp. There are lots of twists and turns and two dead bodies. I enjoyed reading The Glow of Death and found the ending to be very satisfying.

Highly recommend this cozy mystery, The Glow of Death.

My Review

Scripture Doodle and Scripture Doodle: God's Promises are both unique and fabulous books that are a combination devotional and coloring book. But that is almost too simplistic because these books are so enlightening. April Knight is a worship artist who has successfully combined drawing with coloring with biblical truths. These books will help to unleash your creativity. They are a great way to learn God's Word. And a great way to focus on God's Word. I am very impressed with the imagination that went into developing these lovely volumes.

In Scripture Doodle: God's Promises, some of the section titles are: Color the World in Prayer, Visual Scripture, Recipe for Blessing and Faithful to Provide. Each page is a new wonder to discover. Hours and hours of enjoyment and contemplation await readers of these books.

Scripture Doodle books would be a great Christmas gift for people of all ages. I am also thinking that they would be a great gift for people who are laid up in the hospital or for your elder relatives. Teenagers would love these as well.

I highly recommend Scripture Doodle and Scripture Doodle: God's Promises.

My Review

Better Off Thread is the tenth An Embroidery Mystery by Amanda Lee. This is the first book that I have read in this series. It was very well written and an enjoyable read.

Better Off Thread has all the elements that make a cozy mystery a good cozy mystery. The main character is believable as are the supporting characters. The characters were all well developed and interesting. I liked the Oregon Coast setting of this series.

The mystery part of the tale moved the story along. The main character Marcy is helping out her friend and diner owner, Captain Moe, entertain children at the hospital. The Captain is Santa and Marcy is his elf. The hospital administrator is found murdered by Captain Moe. It turns out The Captain had been dating her so is immediately a suspect. There are lots of suspects and red herrings in this tale.

Better Off Thread is a good read. Highly recommend to cozy mystery fans. Loved the ending!

About the Author

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fund raising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:
The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that take place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

My Review

Egg Drop Dead is the seventh Cackleberry Club by Laura Childs. I have read most books in this series and always found them to be an enjoyable read. Egg Drop Dead is no exception.

This series written by Laura Childs is set in the fictional town of Kindred. Kindred is a small midwestern town. The main character Suzanne is joined by her two friends, Toni and Petra, in running the Cackleberry Club which is combination cafe, book store and yarn shop. Finding dead bodies is also a pursuit of Suzanne! She cannot seem to stop finding them!

Suzanne is visiting their cheese supplier at his farm when she cannot find him. Farmer Mike Mullin has been murdered. And of course Suzanne discovers him. It turns out that a developer is very interested in the Mullin farm. Could that be the reason he was killed?

Great ending! Lots of action. Enjoyable cozy mystery!
