Book Description

Filled with her trademark wit, sassy, heartwarming characters, and the steamy Southern atmosphere and beauty of her beloved Carolina Lowcountry, The Hurricane Sisters is New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank's enchanting tale of the ties and lies between generations.

Beloved New York Times bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank once again takes us deep in the heart of the magical Lowcountry--a sultry land of ancient magic, glorious sunsets, and soothing coastal breezes, where three generations of strong women wrestle with the expectations of family while struggling to understand their complicated relationships with each other.

Best friends since the first day of classes at The College of Charleston, Ashley Anne Waters and Mary Beth Smythe, now 23 years old, live in Ashley's parents' beach house rent-free. Ashley is a gallery assistant who aspires to become an artist. Mary Beth, a gifted cook from Tennessee, works for a caterer while searching for a good teaching job. Though they both know what they want out of life, their parents barely support their dreams and worry for their precarious finances.

While they don't make much money, the girls do have a million-dollar view that comes with living in that fabulous house on Sullivans Island. Sipping wine on the porch and watching a blood-red sunset, Ashley and Mary Beth hit on a brilliant and lucrative idea. With a new coat of paint, the first floor would be a perfect place for soirees for paying guests. Knowing her parents would be horrified at the idea of common strangers trampling through their home, Ashley won't tell them. Besides, Clayton and Liz Waters have enough problems of their own.

A successful investment banker, Clayton is too often found in his pied-a-terre in Manhattan--which Liz is sure he uses to have an affair. And when will Ashley and her brother, Ivy, a gay man with a very wealthy and very Asian life partner--ever grow up? Then there is Maisie, Liz's mother, the family matriarch who has just turned eighty, who never lets Liz forget that she's not her perfect dead sister, Juliet.

For these Lowcountry women, an emotional hurricane is about to blow through their lives, wreaking havoc that will test them in unexpected ways, ultimately transforming the bonds they share.

My Review

Dorothea Benton Frank is such a treasure. The Hurricane Sisters had me laughing out loud from the start. I really enjoyed reading this book as it was both entertaining and interesting. It held my attention from the start.

The Hurricane Sisters is set in Charleston and on Sullivan's Island. The story is told by three generations of a family. Frank has created wonderful, layered characters who bring this story to life. I enjoyed the youthful exuberance of Ashley and the elderly no-filter Maisie but I felt closest to middle aged Liz. I could feel her passion for her cause of protecting battered women.

All of Dorothea Benton Frank's books are treasures. I highly recommend the latest, The Hurricane Sisters.

  • Sold by: HarperCollins Publishers CA

Book Description

Since when did every cookie on the plate have to be just like the next? Or each layer of cake exactly the same height? Each piecrust an impeccable work of art and encircled by stunningly perfect pastry leaves? To the uninitiated, all that fastidious, spotless baking is intimidating, not to mention exhausting. The Messy Baker celebrates baking as it happens in the real world—sweet, messy, fun, not always gorgeous, but a way to show love. Which doesn’t make it any less delicious; to the contrary, Charmian Christie’s flavor combinations rise far above the ordinary. Why have a raspberry galette when you can enjoy a raspberry-rhubarb galette with drippy, unctuous walnut frangipane? Or how about a Brie and walnut whiskey tart? It’s all yours without the rigid perfectionism or complicated instructions of other gourmet cookbooks.
Christie’s warm, irreverent voice brings the fun back into baking at a time when home cooks—pulled from pillar to post by jobs and errands—need to have fun. The Messy Baker is a full-service book that not only guides the reader through simple, delicious recipes but is also there to help out when things go wrong. For anyone who gave in frustration when that cake collapsed or the frosting smeared, Christie’s practical advice is here to rescue even the worst disaster and inspire the baker to try the next recipe.

My Review

How can you not love a cookbook that's table of contents includes:

  • Pastry
  • Flaky
  • Dippable
  • Sloppy
  • Smudgy
  • Gritty
  • Drippy
Great chapter titles...just awesome. Now to the cookbook itself. This cookbook is filled with lovely photos. Cookbooks need photos...I'm always amazed when authors leave them out. There is a great introduction to The Messy Baker which includes a multitude of great baking tips. And there is plenty of great baking advice throughout the book. There is some amazing muffin recipes:  Lemony Strawberry-Peach Muffins and Blueberry-Lime Cornmeal Muffins. There are some great desserts such as Raspberry Butter Tarts and Boozy Chocolate Torte.

Here is some great advice from the book:  before beginning to bake, the author's mother issues her commandments:
  1. Assemble all ingredients.
  2. Read the entire recipe—twice.
  3. Always wear an apron.
  4. Don’t eat the batter.
  5. Share with the whole family.

Reading the recipe twice is good advice...some of us have learned that one the hard way!  It is being released as a paperback and as an ebook. It is available in late August.

-The American Bar Association's Gavel Award for "Judges of the Facts," a television documentary on the jury system

My Review

Troubled Water is the third book in the Lark Chadwick Mystery series by John DeDakis however it is the first book of DeDakis`s that I have read. This novel can stand alone; you don`t need to read the first two to enjoy reading Troubled Water.

Author DeDakis is a journalist therefore you know that the ins and outs of the world of journalism are going to be represented properly and they are.  DeDakis is a good writer and the story flows well. Lark Chadwick is a journalist who discovers a body just as she is about to start a new job in southwest Georgia. There are plenty of suspects and twists and turns to keep the reader enthralled. I enjoyed reading this book by John DeDakis.

I recommend the mystery, Troubled Water.

Book Description

When Pru Marlowe takes a dog for a walk, she doesn’t expect to find a body. But Spot, a service dog in training, has too good a nose not to lead her to the remains of the beautiful young woman, and despite her own best instincts, Pru can’t avoid getting involved. The young woman seems to have been mauled by a wild cat – and Pru knows there have been no pumas in the Berkshire woods for years. And while Wallis, Pru's curmudgeonly tabby, seems fixated on the idea of a killer cat, Spot has been sending strange signals to Pru’s own heightened senses, suggesting that the violent death was something more than a tragic accident. As motives multiply, a cougar of a different sort sets her eyes on Pru’s sometime lover, and another woman disappears.  With panther panic growing, Pru may have to put aside her own issues – and her own ideas of domesticity – to solve a savage mystery.

"A good choice for fans of Susan Wittig Albert’s Beatrix Potter series." —Booklist review of Pru Marlowe Pet Noir

"Pru’s struggles to deal with her abilities make this stand out among other animal mysteries, and the sad story of Floyd, the heart-broken Persian, will touch the heart of cat lovers everywhere. Recommend this series to fans of Blaize Clement and Rita May Brown (especially those who have grown weary of the Mrs. Murphy novels). Watch this series closely. It could well sprint to the top of the animal-cozy genre." —Booklist, starred review

"Simon excels in creating unique and believable animal characters as well as diverse and memorable humans, and this sequel is just as good as Dogs Don’t Lie (2011)." —Booklist, starred review

About the Author

Clea Simon is the author of the Dulcie Schwartz feline mysteries, the Pru Marlowe pet noir mysteries, and the Theda Krakow mysteries, as well as three nonfiction books, including The Feline Mystique: On the Mysterious Connection Between Women and Cats. The recipient of multiple honors, including the Cat Writers Associations Presidents Award, she lives in Somerville, Massachusetts, with her husband, Jon Garelick, and their cat, Musetta.

My Review

Panthers Play For Keeps is the first book that I've read by Poisoned Pen Press's author Clea Simon. This is actually the 4th in the series of Pru Marlowe Pet Noir but you don't need to have read the earlier editions to enjoy Panthers.

Panthers Play For Keeps is set in New England. I thought it might be set in Florida before I began to read it as I was fascinated by the Panther Crossing signs in Everglades National Park but I digress. There is an Eastern cougar that is also known as a puma, panther or mountain lion. Who knew!

As a cat lover I loved the main character Pru's cat Wallis...what a character! Pru is an animal lover who trains animals. She also communicates with animals quite easily.  The novel begins with Pru and a dog Spot finding a body. This of course sets off a series of events. What large cat could have killed the victim? Could a panther be prowling the neighbourhood?

Pru is a strong woman and an interesting character. Panthers Play For Keeps was a good mystery that kept me guessing until the end!

Review: All Day and a Night: A Novel of Suspense (Ellie Hatcher #5) by Alafair Burke

  • Sold by: HarperCollins Publishers

Book Description

A new murder case with ties to a convicted serial killer leads Detective Ellie Hatcher into a twisting investigation with explosive and deadly results in this superb mystery from the “terrific web spinner” (Entertainment Weekly) Alafair Burke.

When pyschotherapist Helen Brunswick is murdered in her Park Slope office, the entire city suspects her estranged husband—until the District Attorney’s office receives an anonymous letter. The letter’s author knows a chilling detail that police have kept secret: the victim’s bones were broken after she was killed. Her injuries were eerily similar to the signature used twenty years earlier by Anthony Amaro, a serial killer serving a life sentence for his crimes. Now, Amaro is asking to be released from prison, arguing that he was wrongly convicted, and that the true killer is still on the loose.

NYPD Detectives Ellie Hatcher and JJ Rogan are tapped as the “fresh look” team to reassess the original investigation that led to Amaro’s conviction. The case pits them against both their fellow officers and a hard-charging celebrity defense lawyer with a young associate named Carrie Blank, whose older sister was one of Amaro’s victims. As both the NYPD and Amaro’s legal team search for certainty in years of conflicting evidence, their investigations take them back to Carrie’s hometown and secrets left behind there. And when Carrie falls victim to a brutal attack, Hatcher knows that the young attorney got too close to the truth.

"Spring loaded and razor sharp, All Day and a Night is a surprising and compelling thriller. But Alafair Burke has given us something more gripping than just a crime novel. Her story is about women, their drive, their compassion, and their public and private battles for success and acceptance."-- Ivy Pochoda, author of Visitation Street

"I've been a fan of Alafair Burke from the very beginning and, ten books in, she just keeps surprising me."
-- Michael Connelly

"A masterfully plotted, psychologically complex thriller, Alafair Burke's All Day and a Night raises larger questions about the choices we make, the mistakes we can't undo. Whip-smart and emotionally deft, it delivers all the way through its final pages." -- Megan Abbott, author of Dare Me

About the Author

Alafair Burke is the author of "two power house series" (Sun-Sentinel) that have earned her a reputation for creating strong, believable, and eminently likable female characters, such as NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher and Portland Deputy District Attorney Samantha Kincaid. Alafair's novels grow out of her experience as a prosecutor in America's police precincts and criminal courtrooms, and have been featured by The Today Show, People Magazine, The New York Times, MSNBC, The Washington Post, USA Today, and The Chicago Sun-Times. According to Entertainment Weekly, Alafair "is a terrific web spinner" who "knows when and how to drop clues to keep readers at her mercy."

A graduate of Stanford Law School and a former Deputy District Attorney in Portland, Oregon, Alafair is now a Professor of Law at Hofstra Law School, where she teaches criminal law and procedure. Her books have been translated into 12 languages.

Alafair's latest thriller, Long Gone, has been praised by some of the world's most respected crime writers: Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane, Karin Slaughter, Lisa Scottoline, Lisa Unger, and Nelson DeMille.

My Review

As a huge fan of Alafair Burke's stand-alone novels, I looked forward to diving into her Ellie Hatcher series and I was not disappointed.

All Day and a Night is a well-written police procedural and legal thriller. The novel revolves around two stories...one a recent case of a murdered therapist and a two decades old case where new evidence has been made available. The story is told alternately by Ellie who is a police detective and Carrie a lawyer. Carrie is the half sister of one of the women murdered in the older case.

There are lots of twists and turns to keep the reader in suspense. It is very well written and Burke is very knowledgeable in the legal arena. I did not need to have read the earlier books to be able to enjoy this one.

All Day and a Night is available on June 10th.

Book Description

As a teenager, Toni Murphy had a life full of typical adolescent
complications: a boyfriend she adored, a younger sister she couldn't relate to, a strained relationship with her parents, and classmates who seemed hell-bent on making her life miserable. Things weren't easy, but Toni could never have predicted how horrific they would become until her younger sister was brutally murdered one summer night.

Toni and her boyfriend, Ryan, were convicted of the murder and sent to prison.

Now thirty-four, Toni is out on parole and back in her hometown, struggling to adjust to a new life on the outside. Prison changed her, hardened her, and she’s doing everything in her power to avoid violating her parole and going back. This means having absolutely no contact with Ryan, avoiding fellow parolees looking to pick fights, and steering clear of trouble in all its forms. But nothing is making that easy—not Ryan, who is convinced he can figure out the truth; not her mother, who doubts Toni's innocence; and certainly not the group of women who made Toni's life hell in high school and may have darker secrets than anyone realizes. No matter how hard she tries, ignoring her old life to start a new one is impossible. Before Toni can truly move on, she must risk everything to find out what really happened that night.

But the truth might be the most terrifying thing of all.

My Review

That Night by Chevy Stevens is a well-written tale set in Vancouver and Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The main character, Toni, was a rebellious teenager who was bullied in high school and lived the life of a loner with the exception of her boyfriend Ryan. The background of Toni is a "Mean Girls" type of high school reality. Toni has problems with her mother as well during her teen years.  When her sister Nicole is found murdered, Toni and Ryan are the only suspects really considered. They are convicted and both are incarcerated.

The story goes back and forth between Toni's high school and Toni's life in prison. This book is hard to put down. There is a big twist at the conclusion that surprised me.

That Night is available on June 17th.

And Lacey will need to keep her wits about her because there's a killer that's lurking around her boat, leaving her gifts she'd rather not receive . .

About the Author

Sharon J Bolton was born and brought up in Lancashire, the eldest of three daughters. As a child, she dreamed of becoming an actress and a dancer, studying ballet, tap and jazz from a young age and reading drama at Loughborough University.

She spent her early career in marketing and PR before returning to full-time education to study for a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at Warwick University, where she met her husband, Andrew. They moved to London and Sharon held a number of PR posts in the City. She left the City to work freelance, to start a family and to write.

She and Andrew now live in a village in the Chiltern Hills, not far from Oxford, with their son and the latest addition to the family: Lupe, the lop-eared lurcher. Her daily life revolves around the school run, walking the dog and those ever-looming publishing deadlines.

My Review

Sharon Bolton is a fabulous thriller writer and the Lacey Flint series is mesmerizing!

A Dark and Twisted Tide is impossible to put down. Set in London on the Thames River, Bolton takes the reader into the world of the Thames River and it is a fascinating world. It was very interesting to me as some of my ancestors were longshoremen on the river.

Lacey Flint is attempting to live a quiet life on her yacht which is moored in a marina on Deptford Creek which leads into the Thames. She has gone back to working in uniform in the marine division. And she has started swimming in the Thames in the early morning hour. Scary just to think about that! Lacey finds a body in the river and the story takes off from there. There are lots of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. The ending completely surprised me which is always a bonus.

Did you know that every cm of your hair contains information on one month of your life? I didn't before but I do now.

Highly recommend A Dark and Twisted Tide which is available May 8th!!! Do yourself a favor and read it!
